The Fall of Saigon occurred on April 30, 1975 when the North Vietnamese Communist Party captured Saigon, the capital city of South Vietnam. In the years following the Fall of Saigon, a mass exodus occurred with the flight of millions of people, with many fleeing by boat (who were then referred to as “boat people”).

This exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of the diaspora of the Vietnamese people and refugee resettlement. It includes stories of loss, of cultural identities of different generations struggling to co-exist, and of the process of rebuilding a new life in a foreign environment. This exhibition shares the refugee experience by celebrating the progress of the Vietnamese people worldwide through photography, historical artifacts, a speaker panel, and cultural performances. Speakers will include Mr. Dieu Khuong Huu, Mr. Phu Van Bui, and Ms. My Linh Nguyen, and cultural performers include the Su Viet Zithers and Master Vu Hong Thinh.

This exhibition will take place in the San Francisco Main Library from February 8 through April 4, 2015. The speaker panel and cultural performance will take place in the Koret Auditorium on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from 1pm to 3pm.

The exhibition is presented by the Au Co Vietnamese Cultural Center and individual contributors from the Vietnamese community. Funding and sponsorship are provided by the San Francisco Arts Commission, the California Arts Council, and the San Francisco Main Library. Artwork and materials are on loan from the Viet Museum (Viện Bảo Tàng Việt Nam) - and the museum of the Boat People & the Republic of Vietnam.
